Set up wind loads
Wind setup lives on the Setup tab. Rook computes MWFRS pressures with the ASCE 7-22 Directional Procedure (Ch. 26 & 27) and C&C pressures per §30.3.
There is no separate Calculate button. When basic wind speed, length, width, and plate heights are set, wall, roof, and parapet loads update automatically.
Building configuration
- Open your project and go to the Setup tab.
- Set Number of Stories (1–5) and Roof Type (Flat, Gable, or Hipped).
- Choose Short Direction (Cases 1 & 2) as N-S or E-W. The long direction is the other axis (Cases 3 & 4).
- Enter Plate (ft) and Truss Depth (ft) for each level.
- Optionally + Add parapets (up to five, labeled A–E) and enter each Height (ft).
Code Edition (IBC 2018 or IBC 2021) selects the sheathing capacity table used for wall design. It does not change the ASCE wind edition. Straps and holdowns are unaffected.
Wind load parameters
Enter:
- Basic Wind Speed, V (mph)
- Exposure Category (B, C, or D)
- Kd, Kzt, Ke, and G (defaults are provided and editable)
- Building Type (Enclosure Classification) — Enclosed, Partially Enclosed, or Partially Open (shows GCpi)
- Length (ft) — long direction
- Width (ft) — short direction
There is no Risk Category field. Enter V directly for your site.
Seismic forces
Seismic values on Setup are user-entered PSF, not computed from a seismic code. Set R = 2 or 6.5 for N-S and E-W, then enter per-level PSF as needed.
What Rook computes
- Wall windward/leeward pressures for Cases 1–4
- Roof zone pressures
- Parapet pressures
- C&C pressures
- Collected wind forces (ASD plf) used by shear wall design
Cases 1–4 here are ±GCpi pairs on the short and long axes, not the full ASCE Fig. 27.3-8 torsion cases. Design uses Max(Case 1, 2) for the short direction and Max(Case 3, 4) for the long direction.
